Russell T Davies for Doctor Who / BBC
Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies has dismissed the “online voice” on platforms such as X as “hatred”.
The writer – back in charge for his second stint of Who – has come in for criticism of his stewardship of the show, in particular the characters and storylines, some of which have been described as being “too woke”.
Speaking at SeriesMania in Lille this week, Davies insisted that those views do not reflect the true feelings of the fans, cautioning against falling “into the trap of talking about fans and assuming that means the online voice”.
He continued: “I think they are different things. I know they’re different things, I absolutely know that.
“And that online voice, which is hostile, exists on X, which is a hate site. We shouldn’t be surprised to find hatred on it, because it’s a hate site… It’s very dangerously assumed that that is the fan voice.”
After Disney+ ended its co-production deal with the BBC late last year, a new full series of Doctor Who has yet to be commissioned, although Davies is writing a new special episode for broadcast this Christmas.
