The long-awaited reboot of The X-Files has been given an official pilot order by Disney+’s Hulu.
The show – a cultural phenomenon in the ’90s – follows two FBI agents, originally played by David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, as they investigate paranormal and alien activity as well as a wider government conspiracy.
The drama ran for 11 seasons and two films, including two continuation seasons with Duchovny and Anderson in 2016 and 2018, but the new project is unlikely to feature either actor.
Ryan Coogler, director of the Oscar-nominated Sinners, has been working on the reboot sporadically for the last three years but has now turned his attention to the show full time following the Hulu order.
The Piano Lesson star Danielle Deadwyler has been cast as one of the two new FBI agents, with Coogler writing and directing, and The Copenhagen Test‘s Jennifer Yale serving as showrunner.
Deadline, which first reported the news, refers to the FBI agents being assigned to “a long-shuttered division”, suggesting that the new show will be a continuation of the original’s existing mythology.
Details of the timeline for the production of the pilot, and when Hulu might make a decision on whether to order a full season, are currently unknown.
