Adrian Dunbar, Vicky McClure and Martin Compston for Line of Duty / BBC
The storyline for the upcoming return of conspiratorial cop drama Line of Duty has been revealed.
After six years off the air, creator and writer Jed Mercurio has developed an idea for a seventh series, with filming due to begin in Belfast imminently.
Adrian Dunbar, Vicky McClure and Martin Compston are reprising their roles as Ted Hastings, Kate Fleming and Steve Arnott for the next instalment, which is set in the aftermath of AC-12 being disbanded and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards.
A synopsis reveals that the show will focus on Detective Inspector Dominic Gough, “a charismatic officer winning plaudits for a string of takedowns of organised crime, [who] is accused of abusing his position of trust to act as a sexual predator. But is Gough’s case a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still operating in the shadows?”
Robert Carlyle is the lead guest star, playing Detective Constable Shaun Massie, “a Specialist Rifle Officer (SRO) and veteran marksman, operating with Tactical Operations Unit 7 (TO-7) to take down Organised Crime Groups.
“A gruff loner, Massie keeps himself to himself, but when his boss, TO-7’s commanding officer DI Dominic Gough, is accused of being a sexual predator, Massie’s otherwise detached demeanour changes drastically.”
The new series is expected to be broadcast in early 2027.
