Martyn for MasterChef 2025 / BBC
Age: 51
Occupation: Entrepreneur
From: Merseyside via Yorkshire and Essex
How would you describe your style of cooking?
“I am currently doing all I can to cook new and interesting meals whilst reducing food waste. I have developed an app that allows me to use up the food I have in the fridge, freezer and cupboards and plan my weekly meals and shopping around a zero-waste approach. It also explores different food techniques, cultures and ingredients meaning my meals are varied from all over the world, whilst reducing costs and food waste.
“I love top quality English food using great ingredients, but recently I have been really getting into Asian cuisine. I am experimenting with flavours and ingredients like miso, nori, yuzu and really like to see where I can use them to enhance a dish.”
What is your favourite ingredient to cook with and why?
“I love cod. It’s such a beautiful fish to eat and my favourite way to cook it is poached in butter. I have a tub of butter in the fridge specifically for this purpose and recycle it after use for next time.”
Why did you enter MasterChef this year?
“My family have often said I should enter MasterChef so I decided to take the plunge. I recently turned 50 and have stepped up my interest in food preparation. I love cooking and have always loved the big occasions, for me Christmas dinner is the pinnacle of my year, and I spend a lot of time and effort delivering great food.”
MasterChef continues Wednesday at 8pm on BBC One.
