Newsnight staff have reportedly voiced fears that the long-running show could be axed amid wider cuts at the BBC.
The news discussion show – first broadcast in 1980 – airs weeknights at 10.30pm on BBC Two and the BBC News channel, hosted by a roster of presenters including Victoria Derbyshire and Matt Chorley.
The BBC has already been axing or scaling back on many shows across its entire output – including Newsnight, where the special investigations team was axed, taking the programme’s staff from 57 people to 23.
“Everyone is concerned for Newsnight and how it will fare in the next cuts,” a source told The Sun.
“We’ve been warned there are likely budget reductions and revisions next year. It’s a worrying time.”
A BBC spokesperson said: “We’re very proud of Newsnight‘s success; since its reformat, it has significantly increased its audiences, won an RTS award and is now being moved to a peak-time slot on Friday evenings.
“As we have said, the BBC needs to save £500m over the next three years and BBC News will play its part in contributing to those savings.”
