James Ransone in The Wire / HBO
James Ransone, best known for his role as Ziggy Sobotka in The Wire, has died at the age of 46.
The actor took his own life by hanging in a shed on Friday, according to the Los Angeles Medical Examiner.
Ransone revealed in 2021 that he had been sexually abused by a teacher as a teenager but police decided not to pursue charges, while he also spoke candidly about his previous drug addiction as a youth.
Jamie McPhee, his wife, wrote on Instagram: “I told you I have loved you 1000 times before and I know I will love you again… You told me…
“I need to be more like you and you need to be more like me – and you were so right. Thank you for giving me the greatest gifts – you, Jack and Violet. We are forever.”
Ransone – also known for The Black Phone, Generation Kill and the cult movie Ken Park – is survived by McPhee and their two children.
