The X-Files creator Chris Carter has revealed that he is hoping to conclude his vision for the franchise at some point in the future.
The cult show followed FBI agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) investigating unexplained phenomena, originally running for ten seasons and a movie from 1993 to 2002.
A second film followed in 2008, then in 2016 the TV show was revived for two additional seasons.
A “reboot” of the show without the characters of Mulder and Scully is currently in the works at Hulu, with Sinners director Ryan Coogler overseeing the project, but Carter is aiming to deliver a separate ending for the original.
“There’s a point at which you need to deliver on a promise,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. “And I wanted to deliver more than the promise. I wanted to give [the fans] what they least expected.
“I know that sounds somewhat confusing, but I had a bigger plan and it all made sense. It will make sense, and so hang with me.”
Pressed for further details of his “bigger plan”, Carter replied: “There was a big revelation at the end of the season finale in season 11 that Scully is pregnant. Some people were horrified, outraged. They hated me. It was big.
“And once again, as I say, this is taken on the chin because I have a bigger idea in mind. I think that time will tell.”
Carter’s new R-rated cut of the second movie – The X-Files: I Want To Believe – Vrach Frankenshteyn – is released via Disney+ this Friday.
