Irish public service broadcaster TG4 is in “active discussions” about launching UK-wide via Freely.
Speaking to Broadcast, director-general Deirdre Ní Choistín said that the Irish-language service has a “large” audience already in the UK and that expanding distribution beyond online is a key goal.
“We’re looking at getting TG4 on Freely in the UK,” she told the publication. “We have a large audience in the UK, and we want to be available on platforms [there] and Freely is one that we’re in active talks with at the moment.”
TG4 is currently available in Northern Ireland via Freeview, satellite service Saorview, Sky and Virgin Media, although some programmes – such as certain sports and acquired programmes such as Hacks – are blacked out due to rights restrictions.
Freely, meanwhile, is an internet-powered service which combines traditional terrestrial reception with streamed channels and has been eyed as an eventual replacement for Freeview across the UK.
As well as one-hour and two-hour timeshift services, TG4 also operates a dedicated children’s channel, Cúla4.
