Coronation Street boss Kate Brooks has revealed that the soap will air a flashforward episode next month featuring the death of a mystery character.
Earlier this month the Street lost one of its most loved residents as Billy (Daniel Brocklebank) met his maker in the Corriedale crossover special – and now time is almost up for another Weatherfield resident.
Brooks confirmed that the episode will follow five potential victims after a body is discovered in the flashforward, giving rise to a ‘who is it?’ storyline rather than the traditional ‘whodunnit?’
“This is something that’s been in the making for a really long time,” she told reporters, in quotes carried by Metro. “The big stories we have on the table, it gives us a destination for those big stories to all come together and be involved in a much bigger storyline.
“During the course of the flashforward episode we discover that one of our characters has found a dead body on the street. We don’t know who it is. There are five potential victims and we’ll take the audience on a journey for them to try and figure out who that body is and what happened, what’s the back-story to it and how did it get to that place, why did that person die.”
She continued: “We start the episode in the present and then flash forward. Through the course of that episode we reveal that this is something that’s happening in the future. A body’s been found while everybody seems to be having the time of their lives doing something else entirely.
“Just when we think the story is going in one direction it does a U-turn and goes in a completely different direction. It’s something that keeps people on the edge of their seats I think, and keeps people guessing until the very end. Don’t be fooled by what you think is happening because that might not be the case.”
The episode is due to air in mid-February.
