Elizabeth Kelly as Nellie Ellis in EastEnders
Former EastEnders star Elizabeth Kelly, who played fan favourite Nellie Ellis in 138 episodes, has died at the age of 104.
The character – a relative of Pauline Fowler (Wendy Richard) – first appeared in 1993 and was a largely interfering presence in Walford affairs over the following seven years.
Kelly is thought to have died on Christmas Day last year and will be laid to rest in a service later this month.
An EastEnders spokesperson said: “Elizabeth Kelly created a wonderful character in Nellie Ellis, and it is with great sadness that we learn of her passing.
“Those who worked with Elizabeth at EastEnders will remember her fondly for her warmth and kindness, and our love and thoughts are with Elizabeth’s family and friends.”
Kelly, who also appeared in Coronation Street in the ’70s is survived by her son and daughter as well as multiple grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
