One of Dolly Parton’s most iconic songs, ‘Jolene’, has soared to the top of the Apple Music charts following her death earlier this week.
The country music legend died at the age of 80 on Tuesday following a brief battle with cancer, prompting an outpouring of grief from fans around the globe.
‘Jolene’ – released in January 1974 – tells the real-life story of Parton’s fears that an attractive bank clerk called Jolene would steal away her husband, Carl Dean, after they were newly-married.
The song topped the country charts in the US on its original release and peaked at number 60 on the Billboard Hot 100 but has now become a streaming hit more than 50 years later.
‘Jolene’ is not only top of the current Apple Music charts but has also topped the Spotify charts for the first time as streaming of Parton’s catalogue rose 2320%.
