Britney Spears has been arrested, and subsequently released, in California on the charge of driving under the influence (DUI).
The 44-year-old singer was taken in by the California Highway Patrol at around 9.30pm on Wednesday night (5.30am UK) and was released today at around 6am (2pm UK).
Further details of the incident are currently unknown, although she has been confirmed to appear in court in connection with her arrest on May 4.
The news comes following months of concern for Spears’s wellbeing amid a spate of bizarre posts on social media, which have included high-energy dancing, near-nude photos and even a video of her dancing with a knife.
After years being under a conservatorship, which saw her give up control of her finances and medical care, the arrangement was ended in late 2021 after significant pressure from the #FreeBritney fan movement.
Representatives for Spears have yet to comment on her arrest.
