Line of Duty star Martin Compston has said that the upcoming seventh series of the show will close the chapter on its long-running story arc.
The Jed Mercurio drama is returning for a seventh series next year, six years after the show seemingly resolved its core mystery by revealing who the corrupt officer ‘H’ was.
The ending – that Buckells was in fact the mastermind – was met with disappointment by many fans, but the new series could provide a more satisfactory ending.
“I don’t know if it’s the end of Line of Duty – that would be for Jed Mercurio to say – but it’s the end of the story arc,” Compston – aka DS Steve Arnott – said on The One Show, in quotes reported by the Radio Times.
“It’s the end of everything that’s been building since series one. Everything is coming to a head and it’s pretty explosive.”
Looking back on filming of series seven, which took place in Belfast earlier this year, he continued: “It was a pretty brutal shoot, but I think it’s because what we’re trying to achieve is really ambitious.
“The sheer amount of interview scenes in this one is something we’ve never done. So, just as a mental test [it was challenging].
“We really had to rely on each other when one of us is having a down day, just going like, ‘I don’t know how I’m going to learn an 18-page scene in the next couple of days’.”
Line of Duty series seven is due to air on BBC One and iPlayer in early 2027.
