More than 62 million viewers tuned in Stateside to watch Spain defeat Argentina in the final of the World Cup on Sunday.
The game was staged in New Jersey and featured a Super Bowl-style half-time show with performances from Madonna, BTS, Justin Bieber and Shakira, while President Donald Trump emerged afterwards to present winners’ medals to Spain.
English-language coverage of the game aired on FOX and was seen by 38.937 million viewers, making it the most-watched football game in US history.
Telemundo and Peacock’s Spanish-language coverage pulled in 23.9 million, taking the total US audience to a staggering 62.84 million.
FOX’s peak came at 5.45pm ET when Ferran Torres scored the only goal of the game in extra time, with an impressive 51.685 million watching.
In the UK, the final averaged 9.7 million on BBC One and 2.3 million on ITV1, peaking at a combined 17 million, while in Ireland, RTÉ averaged 1.037 million with a further 1.4 million streaming views.
