Sarah Michelle Gellar and Nicholas Brendan in Buffy, The Vampire Slayer / 20th Century Fox
Sarah Michelle Gellar has shared the news that the proposed revival of Buffy, The Vampire Slayer is not going ahead.
The much-loved cult drama ran for seven seasons between 1997 and 2003, starring Gellar as the titular vampire slayer.
In 2024 Hulu ordered a pilot of a potential revival, Buffy: New Sunnydale, which was filmed last August as starred Ryan Kiera Armstrong as the new slayer and directed by Oscar winner Chloe Zhao.
Gellar was heavily involved in the project and would have reprised her role on a recurring basis as well as serving as an executive producer.
She told followers on social media: “I am really sad to have to share this, but I wanted you all to hear it from me. Unfortunately, Hulu has decided not to move forward with ‘Buffy: New Sunnydale’.
“I want to thank Chloé Zhao, because I never thought I would find myself back in Buffy’s stylish yet affordable boots. And thanks to Chloé, I was reminded how much I love her and how much she means not only to me but to all of you.
“And this doesn’t change any of that, and I promise if the apocalypse actually comes, you can still beep me.”
No reason for Hulu’s decision not to take the show to series has yet emerged.
