MTV will close down its five remaining linear music TV channels in the UK and Ireland at the end of the year, it has been confirmed.
MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV and MTV Live will all cease transmissions on December 31, leaving just the flagship MTV channel – with a schedule of reality TV shows – remaining.
The move comes following the ever-increasing rise of streaming services such as YouTube being a vehicle for viewers to consume music video content.
The MTV brand has slowly been diminishing in the UK over the last five years, with three other music channels closing in 2020, along with the VH-1 channel.
Similarly Channel 4 closed down its five-strong portfolio of music stations, including The Box and Kerrang!, in June 2024.
Although the linear music channels will close, several MTV-branded music stations operate as FAST channels and are available on services such as Pluto TV.
Over the last year, FAST channels have started to become integrated alongside linear TV channels on services such as Virgin Media and Sky Glass, raising the possibility that dedicated MTV channels could reappear more prominently in future.
