Coronation Street producer Kate Brooks has teased “many consequences” for the residents of Weatherfield after next week’s highly-teased Murder Week.
For several months viewers have known that one of five characters – Megan (Beth Nixon), Jodie (Olivia Frances-Brown), Carl (Jonathan Howard), Theo (James Cartwright) or Maggie (Pauline McLynn) – will be murdered by a mystery killer.
The identity of the victim will be revealed in next week’s episodes, and showrunner Brooks has revealed that the repercussions surrounding the murder, as well as the ongoing issues for those who were not murdered, will continue for some time to come.
“Going forward, there’s so many consequences for each individual character,” she told press. “Then we’ve also got the ‘who did it?’ element – that big story going forward, as well as unpacking what’s going on with all those other characters. It’s very complex but satisfying and enjoyable as well.
“For the Murder Week itself, we deliberately intended to make each episode feel like a mini movie. The hook is that we still don’t know who’s been killed, which enables a bit of levity – especially in Jodie’s episode, which is really funny.”
She added: “There are great writers on all the episodes, who gave it that real Corrie feel, while it still felt big and bold and different to what we’ve done before. Great soundtrack – the opening of every episode is a banger!”
New episodes of Coronation Street drop weekdays at 7am on ITVX and also air the same night at 8.30pm on ITV1.
