Judith Chalmers, known for hosting the travel programme Wish You Were Here…?, has died at the age of 90.
The show was a mainstay of the ITV schedules from 1974 to 2003 and saw Chalmers and guests visit various travel locations around the world.
During a broadcasting career that began in 1948 when she was just 13, she also presented Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour and in the 1960s was one of the hosts of Come Dancing – the pre-cursor show to Strictly Come Dancing.
In a statement, Chalmers’s family revealed that she died at home on Thursday night after battling Alzheimer’s Disease for several years.
It read: “After living an extraordinary life that involved over 60 years in broadcasting and countless adventures all over the globe, Judy sadly passed away last night, surrounded by the family she loved so much after suffering with Alzheimer’s for some years.
“We will miss her greatly but she leaves behind a giant suitcase of the happiest of memories.”
Chalmers is survived by her husband of 62 years, Neil Durden-Smith, their two children – including broadcaster Mark Durden-Smith – and six grandchildren.
