Sky Arts has announced the commission of two documentaries centred around classical music greats George Frideric Handel and Claude Debussy.
The Handel Scandal, presented by soprano Danielle de Niese and from Factory Films, tells the story of his oratorio ‘Messiah’.
Premiering in 1742, ‘Messiah’ was a sell-out and made a star out of performer Susannah Cibber, who subsequently became embroiled in a sordid sex scandal.
Dangerous Debussy, meanwhile, comes from Section 52 Films and documents Debussy’s genius through the women who loved and inspired him.
The composer’s real letters are brought to life by BAFTA-winning actor Adeel Akhtar, complemented by testimony from experts and performances from musicians.
“These two additions to our autumn slate demonstrate Sky’s commitment to showcasing high-calibre and culturally enriching arts storytelling,” said Phil Edgar-Jones, executive director of unscripted originals at Sky.
“We’re proud to be championing two diverse independent UK production companies with heartfelt programming which will be free to all audiences via the Sky Arts Freeview channel.”
Both docs will play out on Sky Arts this Autumn.
