Russell T Davies for Doctor Who / BBC
Russell T Davies has appeared to suggest that his second stint as Doctor Who showrunner could be about to come to an end.
The acclaimed writer and producer, 63, masterminded the long-running sci-fi show’s revival in 2005 and remained with the series until 2010.
In the following years he developed shows including Cucumber, Years and Years, A Very English Scandal and It’s A Sin, before making a shock return to Who in late 2021 as part of a new era for the programme which saw the BBC team up with Disney+ for future seasons.
After several specials, a spinoff miniseries and two full seasons with Ncuti Gatwa as The Doctor, Disney+ pulled the plug on the partnership late last year, although the BBC confirmed that Davies would pen a new special to air over Christmas 2026.
The BBC failed to give details of what form the show will take beyond that special, however, with rumours suggesting that a new refresh could be on the cards with a new showrunner in place.
Davies has since created the one-off miniseries Tip Toe for Channel 4 and although he is believed to have written the Who Christmas special already, new comments appear to imply that he has no firm future plans on the horizon.
Speaking to LBC News about his future projects, he said: “I’ve been so busy, I haven’t even got my next thing lined up yet, which is nice. I’m 63 now, I’m taking it slightly slower.
“So now, this month, I will move onto the next thing. Yeah, so early days, but don’t worry, I’ve not stopped.”
A BBC spokesperson declined to comment when approached by Media Mole.
