Carl and Debbie on Coronation Street on April 16, 2026 / ITV
Sue Devaney has revealed that she is ‘making the most’ of her time on Coronation Street ahead of her character Debbie’s eventual exit.
In a long-running storyline that began last year, Debbie – sister of Kevin Webster (Michael Le Vell) – revealed a devastating diagnosis of dementia at the age of just 56.
Even though her symptoms are worsening, Debbie is expected to remain active in Weatherfield well into 2027 and possibly beyond.
Speaking to BANG Showbiz, Devaney revealed: “I think when an actor gets to a certain age they think, ‘This is quite nice. I can go home every night, I can have my tea, I’m not living out of a suitcase.’
“And it’s nice to have a regular wage, because as an actor you never know what’s next. So as you get older you think, ‘This is quite nice.’ But if it’s not to be, it’s not to be.
“It’s only in soap where you think, ‘I’ve got a job for a while.’ But we never know when it’s going to come to an end, or the character is going to be killed off, so you just have to make the most of it.”
Talking about her thoughts on Debbie’s eventual exit, she added: “I don’t know, and I don’t like to know. I think it’s nice to just get the scripts and just play along with it.”
Devaney made her debut as Debbie in 1984 and has been a part of the regular cast again since 2019.
