The BBC has confirmed the return of Diane Morgan’s breakout comedy Ann Droid for a second series.
The show, which debuted last month, stars Morgan as a second-hand assistive robot called Linda who is brought in to help the elderly Sue (Sue Johnston|) live independently by her son.
Sue is initially reluctant to engage with Linda, who refers to Sue as “Sue! Sue! Sue!” due to an initial mixup over her name, but over the course of the series they develop a warm and poignant relationship.
News of the recommission for six new episodes comes after episode one hit over 8.1 million viewers – including iPlayer – to date.
“The response to Ann Droid has been so incredible,” said Morgan, who also created and wrote the show. “We’re all totally blown away. I’m really looking forward to not blinking, needing physio and hearing Cotton Eye Joe on repeat.”
British screen royalty Johnston added: “I am so unbelievably happy that we are to do another series! Great script, great cast, great crew.
“The reaction from the public has been wonderful. Even my doctor called me Sue, Sue, Sue this morning! Everyone has been asking if there will be more and now we can tell them! Yippee.”
Emma Lawson, the BBC’s interim director of comedy, said: “We’re delighted to be bringing Ann Droid back for a second series. Diane and Sarah [Kendell, co-writer] have created such a warm, relatable, and uniquely funny comedy that audiences in their millions have fallen in love with.
“Alongside the brilliant team at Boffola and Witchcraft Industries, they’ve given us something truly distinctive, and Linda and Sue Sue Sue have quickly become two of comedy’s most lovable characters. We’re thrilled that we will all get to spend more time with them!”
The new series is expected to air on BBC One in 2027.
