How did you react to the news that you would be on the show?
“When my husband and I used to watch Bake Off, I would always imagine what it must be like to actually be there – thinking about what I would bake for each challenge. And then suddenly, I was there. My husband secretly sent off my application without telling me, and when he told me that the Bake Off team wanted to speak to me, I was – to put it mildly – shocked. We were at home, and it was the most unexpected phone call.”
What are your strengths and weaknesses as a baker?
“My strength is definitely my attention to detail and love for flavour balance. I often said that my strongest skills are in desserts and cakes – the decoration, the mousses, and patisserie-style bakes. My weakness is working with yeasted dough. It has a life of its own, and I sometimes lack the patience to wait for it to rise just right. I’m still learning how to feel the dough, not just follow a recipe. But that’s what makes baking so exciting – there’s always room to grow.”
Was it surreal meeting Noel and Alison for the first time?
“Meeting Alison and Noel for the first time was completely surreal. You’ve seen them so many times on TV, laughed at their jokes, and suddenly – they’re standing right in front of you, smiling and cheering you on like old friends.”
How did you feel about your first judging from Paul and Prue?
“Yes, of course I was nervous – it’s hard not to be when your bakes are being tasted by such legendary experts. But honestly, it was more curiosity and excitement than fear. I wanted to hear their honest opinions, to know what I was doing well and what needed work. I always see constructive feedback as a way to grow. So when they came to my station, I took a deep breath and thought, ‘Here’s my chance to learn from the best.'”
The Great British Bake Off begins Tuesday night at 8pm on Channel 4.
