5 has secured a sub-licensing deal with TNT Sports to show daily highlights of the Commonwealth Games this Summer.
The BBC first showed the competition in 1954 and has broadcast every edition since, with live coverage of major sporting events airing on linear channels, iPlayer and online.
Late last year, however, it emerged that TNT had secured the exclusive rights to the 2026 edition – to be staged in Glasgow – with live coverage across the TNT Sports linear channels and HBO Max.
Now 5 has agreed a deal for a free-to-air highlights programme at the conclusion of each day’s action, ending the BBC’s long-running affiliation with the Games.
“We’re delighted to welcome 5 as our free-to-air highlights broadcaster in the UK for Glasgow 2026,” said Katie Sadleir, chief executive of the Commonwealth Games.
“Together with TNT Sports, 5 will help bring the excitement of the Commonwealth Games to audiences across the UK, showcasing the brilliant athletes, inspiring stories and unforgettable moments that make the Games unique. Fans up and down the country will be able to follow the action as competitors from across the Commonwealth take centre stage in Glasgow.”
Ben Frow, 5’s chief content officer, added: “The Commonwealth Games is one of the standout events in a fantastic summer of sport this year, and here at 5 we’re delighted to be working with TNT Sports to bring the biggest sports stars – from Adam Peaty to Amy Hunt and Dina Asher-Smith – to a free-to-air audience in the UK.
“We’ll be bringing extended highlights of all the action from Glasgow every day on 5 as part of a growing line up of sport.”
This year’s Games take place from July 3 to August 2.
