The BBC’s new Director-General Matt Brittin has promised that Doctor Who will ‘regenerate’ again amid uncertainty over the show’s future.
Last month it was confirmed that this year’s Christmas special has been axed and Russell T Davies has left his role as showrunner following the end of the BBC’s co-production deal with Disney+.
The corporation also announced that the show would be put out to tender to production companies, although no timescale for the process has yet been given – with some reports suggesting that it may not return to screens until 2028 at the earliest.
Speaking earlier this week, Brittin told reporters: “That’s a show that has regenerated multiple times in its 60-plus year history, and will do so again.
“I think that’s one of the great things about the 100-year history of the BBC. We can do that, and we can creatively renew shows that people love, and we’ll be working hard on that right now.”
Meanwhile, BBC Studios – the commercial arm of the BBC – has confirmed that it will bid for the tender, with chief executive Tom Fussell telling Deadline: “We’ve been the producer for 60 years and we want to be the producer for another 60 years so we will be going for that tender with gusto. We are in it to win it.”
