Pubs across England and Wales will be allowed to stay open through the night this Sunday until 5am on Monday morning, the government has confirmed.
England are taking on co-hosts Mexico in a round-of-16 clash which does not kick off until 1am on Monday morning due to the time difference between the UK and Mexico City, where the game is being staged.
Pubs could have applied to their local councils for a late opening but the deadline expired before England’s fixture was guaranteed – and councils also had the discretion to turn down applications.
“Football might be coming home but we’re making sure fans don’t have to,” said outgoing Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
“Pubs staying open till the final whistle is good news for supporters and good news for the pubs and venues that bring our communities together.
“The whole country will be backing the team. Come on England!”
Despite the late kickoff, the government has insisted that children should still arrive for school as normal on Monday morning.
A spokesperson said: “It is up to parents to make their own decisions. We want everyone to enjoy the game but children should be at school on Monday.”
Coverage of the match will air live on BBC One and iPlayer from midnight.
