Gary Glitter
Convicted paedophile Gary Glitter is reported to be in a frail state in prison.
The 81-year-old, who rose to fame as a singer in the ’70s and ’80s, has been found guilty of child abuse charges on multiple occasions and is currently 11 years into his most recent 16-year sentence.
According to The Sun, however, Glitter is expected to die behind bars at HMP Channings Wood in Devon due to his deteriorating health.
The newspaper says that he is now almost completely deaf, requires the use of a wheelchair and is anxious about financial issues in the outside world.
“He is deaf and can barely move — and most people would struggle to recognise him now,” a source said.
“He seems to be on his last legs, with his body giving up. And if he doesn’t get parole soon most officers and inmates think he will see out his days in jail.
“He often moves around in a wheelchair and staff are told about his hearing impairment and reduced mobility.
“Glitter’s case was also back in court recently and that has weighed on him and is adding to his woes. He is deeply troubled by what is going on.
“Added to that, he is seen as arrogant in prison and most inmates don’t like him. And he has to be kept on a VPU (vulnerable prisoner unit) as it is not solely a jail for sex offenders.
“He is kept out of harm’s way because he would not be safe on another wing, but he is spending up to 23 hours a day in his cell.”
Glitter’s most recent bid for parole – in June 2025 – was denied.
